Privatization neutrality in mixed oligopoly with externalities
Abstract:
This study examines whether market intervention through public firms can be an effective policy tool to tackle externalities. To address this issue, we develop a mixed oligopoly model with general demand, cost, and externality functions, and allow externalities to be positive or negative. In this general framework, we demonstrate that the optimal degree of privatization is independent of the level of externalities if the cost function is quadratic. This result holds even when the number of private firms is exogenous or endogenously determined under free entry. In the case of linear demand, the optimal degree of privatization never exceeds 20 percent in a mixed duopoly, and increases with the number of private firms in a mixed oligopoly, even under a general externality function. These findings can be referred to as renewed privatization neutrality, which shows that the optimal degree of privatization is independent of externalities. From the perspective of policy implementation, our results suggest that the government should rely on policy instruments other than privatization to control externalities.

Trade and firm selection under perfect competition in a Ricardian model with a continuum of goods
Abstract:
This study examines trade patterns, the welfare effects of trade, and the impact of country size on wages and welfare when firm selection occurs under perfect competition in a two-country Ricardian model with a continuum of goods. We show that, regardless of country size, a country tends to export goods for which its relative average productivity is higher under autarky; that is, trade patterns follow the Ricardian comparative advantage. The presence of firm heterogeneity implies that both countries produce goods that are similar to the borderline good in terms of relative average productivity. We also show that a country gains from trade, even if it produces all of its imported goods, because the trade-induced firm selection improves average productivity in export sectors, leading to higher real wages measured by exported goods. As for the impact of country size, if all goods are produced in both countries, a country experiences a rise in its relative wage when it grows in terms of labor endowment. Furthermore, in this case the country that experiences the growth in labor forces suffers a decrease in per-capita real income due to falling average productivity in export sectors.

ポルシェの中古車価格に与えるオプションの影響
(The Impact of Options on Used Porsche Cars Prices)
Abstract:

Move Together or Drop Out? The Impact of “Going Further Ahead” by Front-runners of Climate Action
Abstract:
Although it has been several decades since global environmental issues were recognized and the need for multilateral cooperation was acknowledged, it is difficult to say that multilateral cooperation schemes are functioning properly. In this situation, certain groups of countries, such as the EU and the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA), have taken the lead in introducing strict carbon taxes. Then, how do other countries respond to the decisions made by these leading countries? Do they move together and raise their carbon tax rates, or do they free-ride by lowering their carbon tax rates? To answer this question, we analyze the responses of other countries using a quantitative trade model that incorporates carbon dioxide emissions and the negative utility caused by them. Our findings reveal that many countries drop out except for China. However, the results would be very mixed when we assume that each country can set different tax rates across the types of fossil fuels.
Moreover, our analysis also examines the impacts on carbon dioxide emissions, and shows that carbon dioxide emissions increase in the drop countries, which results in the increase in the global carbon dioxide emissions.

Abstract:

Notes on a Defense of Compulsive Measures Against Child Labor
Abstract:
In this study, we reconstruct Dessy's (2000) model employing a simpler overlapping generations model. This study also analyzes the interrelationship between child labor, fertility, and human capital. The model's basic structure coincides with that of Dessy (2000); however, the dynamic system's phase diagram differs from the conventional one.

Global Firms: New Implications from Importing-Exporting
Abstract:
This paper studies the role of global firms that simultaneously import and export in aggregate outcomes. Using Chinese customs data, we document import-export complementarity at firm level and industry level. To examine this implication, we develop a heterogeneous firm model where final goods are produced with intermediate inputs subject to selection into importing and exporting. We find that the model of importing-exporting amplifies the effect of trade liberalization (relative to that in standard trade models of either exporting-only or importing-only) on trade flows and welfare through disproportionate share reallocations toward most efficient global firms.

Child Mortality, Child Labor, Fertility, and Development
Abstract:
If developed countries were to implement policies to improve infant survival probability by aiding developing countries, would this necessarily promote economic development? This study aims to answer this question. This study employs a two-period overlapping generations model to determine how an increase in infant survival probability affects developing countries. The results show that policies to improve infant survival probability are effective in economies with sufficient human capital accumulation, but exacerbate poverty in economies with low human capital accumulation. This is because child labor exists in the least developed countries and buffers individuals from the costs of poverty and educational investment.

Effects of Capital-use Tax and Automation Subsidy in an Endogenous Growth Model
Abstract:
To examine the effects of capital-use tax and automation subsidy on the fraction of automated industries and the inequality between capitalists and workers, we formulate an endogenous growth model with automation, innovation, and human capital accumulation. We show that a higher capital-use tax drives down the wage rate and stimulates automation on the balanced growth path (BGP), while a reduction in automation subsidies also lowers the wage rate but inhibits automation.

Corporate Environmentalism at the Nash and Kantian Equilibria
Abstract:
We explore the characteristics of the Nash and Kantian equilibria and their impact on corporate environmentalism. We focus on oligopolistic firms' investments in environmental technology and compare the level of investment under Kantian behavior with that under Nash behavior and the social optimum. We show that the Kantian equilibrium investment is greater than the Nash equilibrium investment if they are concerned about other firms' environmental damage. We also demonstrate that the Nash equilibrium investment is always below the social optimum, whereas the Kantian equilibrium investment can exceed the socially optimal level.

Partial Equity Ownership in International Trade
Abstract:
This paper investigates welfare implications of partial equity ownership (PEO) in international trade. PEO allows firms to facilitate production transfer across borders increasing joint profits of PEO pairs, but it simultaneously reduces the degree of competition in the domestic market decreasing consumer surplus. We find that if firms freely choose levels of PEO, the former benefit is dominated by the latter cost and a government has an incentive to restrict PEO between domestic and foreign firms. However, this does not always mean that the government should completely ban PEO; instead, it may improve social welfare by allowing for PEO with large trade costs, although optimal levels are lower than those set by PEO pairs. The welfare result is more likely to occur when there is cost asymmetry among domestic firms.
